Ray was an exceptionally active member of MMARS particularly in the realms of Contest activity - e.g. National Field Day etc. To him MM meant more than Melton Mowbray, than Maritime Mobile and Mickey Mouse. He was "Mr. Mirth" and his light-hearted attitude belied an underlying seriousness - it was to benefit him in his last, sudden, days of one of modern ills to which he reluctantly succumbed.
Following a career in the Medical Branch of, as he termed it, "The Mob" (meaning the Royal Air Force) including service in the Far East, Ray devoted his attentions to becoming a professional Driving Instructor in which field he gained a high reputation.
He was unfortunately colour-blind - a fact which prevented him from continuing in the medical world following the advent of coloured pills, capsules and the like. He also encountered, but overcame, difficulties with the colour-coding of resistors and components in radio - but what, might you ask, of traffic lights! Ray told us "I used to go by which was the brightest of the non-coloured (to me) lights" !
