SPOTLIGHT ON MEMBERS
No. 3 - John Leslie ("Jack") Bowley - G3FXP

A Founder Member, Jack was the host at the first-ever Meeting of the newly formed Society - a "Shack Visit" to his station in Eastfield Avenue, Melton Mowbray. In those days, with barely a dozen members, it was possible for the host (or correctly the hostess - in this case Beryl) to accommodate and cater for the visitors and there would be at least two Shack Visits programmed during each season. In more recent times, with numbers at Meetings being more than double that figure it is not possible to have such social and intimate events.
Jack was Post Office - well and truly and indeed his wife, Beryl, was originally in "the firm". He served as aircrew in India with the RAF during WWII and later was a very active member of Civil Defence, particularly during the time of the "Cold War". He was born where his mother was Postmistress at Twyford, near Melton Mowbray and he rose to be Area Telephones Manager, Leicester and although widely travelled he preferred the picturesque serenity of his beloved Leicestershire for his eventual retirement.

Here we see Jack 'at the family seat' Mondego Kirby Bellars.

His untimely passing into the ranks of Silent Keys on 20th September 1996 left a gap in the amateur fraternity which is still noticeable, yet his own sense of humour survives to ask you, with the blessing of Beryl:

But who's this geezer at Giza?
